Philosophy

I practice psychotherapy with a body orientation.  When one learns to listen to how the body speaks - through feeling, expression, urges, revelations and physical symptoms, tension patterns, dreams and visceral reactions – an awareness develops that is rooted in the body.  The body then becomes a tool - the bridge to accessing deeper levels of conscious and unconscious material used for processing in psychotherapy.

My clinical practice is grounded in psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral theory.  Psychodynamic work examines human behavior and relationships and the ways in which they are shaped by conscious and unconscious influences.  It is an approach that weighs how past experiences may be impacting life in the here and now and considers unspoken expectations and underlying beliefs that may be limiting a person’s potential for life satisfaction.  Cognitive behavioral theory compliments psychodynamic understanding by targeting problematic and distressing thoughts, emotions and behaviors through procedures that are systematic and goal oriented.  It teaches skills and techniques designed to improve a person’s functioning in the personal and professional realm.
